Manuscripts and a portrait photograph of Charles Schmidt, an Appleton, Wisconsin resident who served with the 5th Marine Corps Regiment during World War I. Most of the manuscripts are scanned copy prints and include Schmidt's service records and discharge papers. Other documents pertain to Schmidt being wounded by machine gun fire during the Battle of Soissons, which was part of the Second Battle of the Marne. Included are scanned copies of his clinical record, a fluoroscopy report, and handwritten notes pertaining to his injuries. Also included are three certificates, with one being a certificate issued after his death in 1963 and two being oversized. The oversized certificates include one issued for service in the Marine Corps, and a certificate issued by the French military to honor the men of the 5th Regiment for their participation in the Battle of Soissons. The portrait is a scanned copy print of an oval composite photograph of Schmidt in his Marine Corps uniform.
